Black seed is also known as Black Cumin. The scientific name is Nigella Sativa Black Seed is used for multiple purpose to cure diseases like cancer, and it also is used to maintain health.
Black seed also known as Habbatus Sauda by our locals is used for multiple purpose to maintain good health. It is considered as Makanan Sunnah by the Muslim community. The holy prophet Muhammed stated in his Hadith (teachings) ‘Hold on to the use of the black seed for it has a remedy for every illness except death’. The research on its multiple health goodness is pretty extensive, primarily in the areas of cardiovascular health, inflammation, diabetes, fatty liver, obesity, kidney diseases, lungs protection, arthritis and skin protection. Black Seed is an anti-oxidant and up-regulates the antioxidant enzyme such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT)and molecules such as glutathione (GSH). Black Seed is also an anti-inflammatory and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines. It also modulates the immune system by increasing the macrophage population and stimulates the activity of these macrophages to engulf the foreign pathogens
Benefits of Black seed:
Asthma - NSO supplementation improves asthma control and lung function. This was associated with a remarkable normalization of blood eosinophilia.
Allergic Diseases - Black seed oil is proved to be an effective adjuvant for the treatment of allergic diseases towards 152 patients with allergic diseases (allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, atopic eczema).
Nasal Dryness - 42 geriatric patients with nasal dryness and related symptoms were randomized to receive either 2 weeks of isotonic sodium chloride solution (ISCS) followed by 2 weeks of N. sativa oil (NG oil) or the same treatment in the opposite order. Nasal dryness, obstruction and crusting improved significantly with the use of NSO compared to ISCS.
Oxidative Stress - 50 volunteer obese (body mass index = 30-35 kg/m(2)) women aged 25-50 years old. They received a low- calorie diet with 3 g/day NS oil or low-calorie diet with 3 g/day placebo for 8 weeks. NS oil concurrent with a low-calorie diet decreased weight and increased SOD levels in obese women.
Fatty Liver - NS 2.5ml twice a day for 3 months (2) Placebo Grade of hepatic steatosis was significantly reduced in the NS group. Liver function (ALT/AST) improved. LDL, TG and HDL improved significantly.
Hepatitis C - 30 patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, who were not eligible for IFN/ribavirin therapy. Sativa was administered for three successive months at a dose of (450 mg three times daily). Sativa was tolerable, safe, decreased viral load, and improved oxidative stress, clinical condition and glycemic control in diabetic patients.
Women & Heart - 90 obese women, aged 25-50 years old with body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 35 kg m(-2).They were randomly assigned to receive a low-calorie diet with 3 g per day (1 g before each meal) NS oil or placebo for 8 weeks. Weight, waist circumference triglyceride (TG) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels decreased in the NS group compared to the placebo group.
Diabetes -114 type 2 diabetic patients received activated charcoal as placebo and (2) received 2g NS, daily, for one year, in addition to their standard oral hypoglycemic drugs. NS showed a significant drop in FBG, HbA1c, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and a significant elevation in total antioxidant capacity TAC, SOD and glutathione. Long term supplementation with NS improves glucose homeostasis and enhances antioxidant defense system.
Chronic Kidney Disease - 66 patients received conservative management of CKD consisting of alpha-keto analogue (600 mg tablet three times a day). (2) 70 patients received conservative management along with alpha-keto analogue and N. sativa oil (2.5 mL, per orally, once daily) for 12 weeks. NSO along with alpha-keto analogue is more efficacious and safe in delaying the progression of disease patients with CKD Stages 3 and 4.
Rhematoid - 40 female RA patients start with placebo for one month, and then 500mg Black Seed (twice a day). A marked improvement in the disease after intake of Black Seed. It can be used as an adjunct treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.
Take 1 capsule once a day, with meal.
