1. Epithelial Barriers

• The epithelial cells are joined together by the distinct intercellular junctions, known as the epithelial junctional complex.
• Once the junctional complex is compromised, the membrane loses its selective barrier and become susceptible to the entry of harmful agents, such as viruses into the bloodstream.
• All three, Zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin D are essential for the integrity and homeostatis of the tight and adherens junction protein.
• Zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin D are used to seal the intercellular spaces, which are responsible for the selective paracellular diffusion.
