EGGSHELL MEMBRANE: BALANCED NUTRIENTS FOR YOUR CARTILAGE AND LIGAMENT

You won’t get the same results from cooked eggs but a 7-10 day program of eggshell membrane supplement markedly increases joint comfort and flexibility in people suffering from limited range of movement and pain, according to a clinical study in Clinical Rheumatology. Millions of people in the world suffer from joints and connective tissue problems, and the numbers are expected to grow as the population ages.

Eggshell membranes contain collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin and abundant glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), building blocks of joints. They supply the necessary structural nutrients to the joints to strengthen its capacity to absorb shock. Elastin and collagen provide the fibrils of the woven lattice strands that comprise ligaments and tendons. Hyaluronic acid makes up synovial fluid found in human joints to fill in the spaces between collagen fibrils. Glycosaminoglycans contribute to the synovial fluid’s lubricating properties and control fluid flow into and out of the joint space. Chondroitin, another type of GAG, provides much of the joints’ resistance to compression.

Since the discovery that eggshell membranes  provide almost all of the structural components necessary to joint structure and integrity, they are being intensively studied for their ability to intervene in joint degeneration.

Joint Pain Beyond Cartilage Damage

It is important to note that, although associated with old age, osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease are not simply a result of the aging process, nor are they a result of general wear and tear on joints. Osteoarthritis (OA) and degenerative joint disease almost always begin as a ligament weakness resulting from injury. Approximately 20% of people who suffer from osteoarthritis are likely to start from a small injury from sports or accident on their ligaments and tendon.  When it is not resolved, it can progress to a complete breakdown of cartilage, causing arthritis in later years.  It is called Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD).

Degenerative joint disease (DJD) is a painful condition that results in the deterioration of the cartilage tissues that support the weight-bearing joints in the body. Once the cartilage is thinned or lost, the constant grinding of bones against each other causes pain and stiffness around the joint. Abnormal and excess bone formations (bone spurs) grow from the damaged bones, causing further pain and stiffness. These are the classic signs of joint instability. When this happens, our body will do 3 things to stabilize the joints. The joints will swell to protect the cartilage, the muscle will spasm to protect the nerves and a growth of bone spurs, to protect adjacent joints.

Today, many doctors and specialists regard DJD as a “whole” joint disease and not simply the loss of cartilage. Ken Brandt of Indiana University School of Medicine and his team suggested that the origin and progression of OA should attribute to cartilage, and any of the tissues of the affected joints including the subchondral bone, synovium, capsule, periarticular muscles, sensory nerve endings and supporting ligaments. It then led to numerous studies that suggest that to treat joint osteoarthritis you must treat the whole joint.

If the ligaments become weak and untreated (i.e. ligament laxity), it will lead to subchondral bone changes (bone destruction) that leads to cartilage changes which in turn leads to osteoarthritis and long term body pain in the degenerative condition. It is concluded now that this ligament laxity (a stretched, loose ligament) is the main cause of joint instability.

Ligaments are bands of tough elastic tissue around the joints. They connect bone to bone, give the joints support, and limit their movement. Ligaments are found around your knees, ankles, elbows, shoulders, and other joints. Stretching or tearing them can make the joints unstable. Ligaments are made up of both collagen and elastin structural proteins. Eggshell membrane contains high quality of these structural protein, making it the best ingredient to heal weak ligaments.

Why Is Eggshell Membrane Supplement So Special?

Almost all nutrients that occur naturally in egg membranes have been shown to support joint health and flexibility. Since cooking changes the nature of the membranes, making it lose its natural qualities, special processing is required to remove the membranes from the eggshells yet retain their biological activity and high concentration of hyaluron and GAGs.

Not All Eggshell Membrane Are The Same

BiovaFlex eggshell membrane is the only egg membrane that retains the natural nutrients in eggshell membrane. As well as a rich source of collagen, BiovaFlex also contains desmosine and isodesmosine, two amino acids that provide elastin’s flexible and resilient properties and helps to improve the production of collagen. It has been extensively studied  for its benefits to the joints and has recently been published in Journal of Medicinal Food 2015 and Journal of Medicinal Food 2019.

In 2015, it has been demonstrated that BiovaFlex eggshell membrane was associated with:

  • More than 15% improvement in range of motion at the neck, back, hips, shoulders and knees.
  • Improvement in ease of physical activity up to 15%.
  • Reduction of back pain in just 5 days

Furthermore, the most recent study published in 2019 indicated that taking BiovaFlex eggshell membrane daily has shown:

  • Reduction of joint discomfort
  • Reduction in joint stiffness 5 times more than placebo in 5 days
  • Significant improvement in walking distance within 5 days

Benefits Of Eggshell Membrane For Your Ligament Health

Biovaflex is primarily rich in:

  • Collagen Type 1

The fibrous protein for your cartilage and is found mainly in the ligaments and tendons. It is involved in the formation of ligaments and tendons.  The collagen contents in BiovaFlex are more than 15% and because it is sourced exclusively from egg membrane, no animals are harmed during its production.

  • Elastin

The protein that provides elasticity to various tissues. BiovaFlex contains more than 20% of elastin that allows the various human tissues to retain its shape when stretched, contracted or pinched.

  • Desmosine and isodesmosine

The two peptides that contribute to elastin’s rubbery properties and to stimulate the body to produce more elastin.

  • Glycosaminoglycans

The building blocks for chondrocytes, which function to rebuild damaged cartilage.

  • Transforming growth factors

The protein for tissue repair, cellular differentiation and immune function.

  • Antioxidants

They inhibit ROS formation, the free radicals that may cause damages to the cells.

Although eggshells have been studied and found effective on their own, some practitioners recommend a combination with a complementary extract of Boswellia to further enhance the pain and inflammation reduction properties.

Marco Polo’s Gum

Boswellia serrata (frankincense), spice of choice for Marco Polo as he blazed the Silk Road from Europe to Asia, commonly grows in India and gained its therapeutic reputation from its gum (guggulu), which limits inflammatory activity. Boswellia stops breakdown of tendons and ligaments.

A 2014 Cochrane review found moderate quality evidence for the benefits of Boswellia serrata in the treatment of osteoarthritis and with low risk of adverse events.  A 2015 review and meta-analysis of ayurvedic interventions for osteoarthritis reported benefits of boswellia in relief of pain and improvement in function.

When combining BiovaFlex eggshell membrane and boswellia,  they are not just “covering up” pain signals the body sends out; they address the underlying genetic expression and structural issues, allowing the joints to recover and renew.
